Month-end shouldn't feel like an audit treasure hunt. Yet many founders find themselves sifting through receipts, correcting invoices, or wondering why the numbers don't quite add up. A few simple practices can bring order to the chaos - and make month-end a breeze rather than a burden.

What "Messy" Month-End Looks Like

  • Transactions that haven't been reconciled

  • Invoices that were sent late (or not at all)

  • Duplicated or missing receipts

  • Unclear notes or payment references

Habits That Make a Difference

  • Reconcile weekly - not just at month-end

  • Keep a single receipts folder, ideally cloud-based

  • Use standard naming conventions for consistency

  • Review aged debtors regularly to avoid long-term late payments

Tools That Help

  • Accounting software (e.g. Xero, FreeAgent)

  • Receipt capture tools (like Dext)

  • Shared checklists for monthly wrap-up

  • Dashboards that highlight red flags before they become problems

The Goal Isn't Perfection

It's consistency. The more routine your review process becomes, the easier it is to spot (and fix) issues early.

If your month-end routine feels like a scramble, I can help you set up a smoother, saner process that works for your business rhythm.
